The Multi-Stage Interview Process: Prospective Candidate or a Dolphin In-training?

When Hoops Become Hurdles

A part of the job search is jumping through hoops to prove your qualifications and interest in a role.

After you have submitted a resume, write the optional cover letter and maybe even networked on LinkedIn, you get the hopeful email of the first round of interviews.

You research, write down questions and dress professionally; even if it is only the shoulders up for a FaceTime call.

It all goes well.

Couple days later, YOU follow-up and progress to next round of interviews. This round is different.

Depending on your field, a required sample of work could be necessary as a way of proving technique and skill. In my case, as a communication professional, most companies expect an UNPAID writing sample based on a given topic.

Which adds another hoop to jump through on top of negotiating salary, benefits and learning more about the role.

There are many benefits for these hoops but too many and a lack of transparency throughout the job hunt leaves one feeling like a dolphin jumping through rings or a seal balancing a ball on its snout.

Not to mention the time and money a prospective candidate dedicates to their job search. The transportation cost, networking and the wait for the final decision reminds you of a dog learning discipline to be rewarded with a treat.

After you have experience interview fatigue from answering the same questions two or three times, you are still on the chopping block.

Keep trying!

Continue to apply, network and attend interviews because getting a job isn't easy, if it was no one would be unemployed.
